Sims served in London during the V-1 buzz-bombing. It was there in the spring of 1944 that she met her future husband, U.S. Army Lieutenant, E. J. Sims, a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division who was in London on medical leave.
She has the auspicious honor of landing at Utah Beach in Normandy while being transferred to Paris, which at the time was still under enemy resistance. For these two moves, she received two battle stars, a feat that was somewhat unusual for a woman at that time.
In 2001 she was honored by the French government with a Veteran's Medal for making the Normandy landing and serving duty during the Liberation of Paris in '44. She continues to receive recognition for her war achievements.
